Comic booking it

Clint was not one to frequent comic shops. In fact, he usually stayed as far away from them as possible--not because, like the other Avengers, he was afraid he might be recognized, but because he was pretty certain he wouldn't be, and that got a little old after a while.

But Coulson had been moping because he couldn't get in to get his Captain America comics for a couple months, and Clint didn't like to see Coulson moping, so he decided to stop by and pick them up for the agent. He'd probably just drop them on his desk when Coulson wasn't around, but at least he knew it would make the man smile.

Normally Clint wouldn't have wasted any time in getting over to this douchebag's house, but he'd gotten roped into helping out with the rookies at HQ, so it was almost dark by the time he managed to get over to the place, and he caught Blaine mid-painting. He parked his car just up the street so he could casually stroll by the place.

"Hey," he says when he gets close enough for Blaine to hear him.

Blaine jerks a bit at the sound of someone talking to him and looks around for the source. "Hi," he says, confused and a little worried to see Clint there.

"Are you stalking me?" he asks.

Yes.

Clint laughs and shrugs. "Nah, I just wanted to see how you were doing. And I, uh..." he looks around and then pulls a comic out of his jacket, "figured you might want this."

Blaine looks at him a little suspiciously. "Aren't you a stranger? I don't think I should take gifts from strangers."

"Smart kid," Clint says with a smirk. "Don't think of it as gift. This is just me...picking up comics for a friend."

After a moment Blaine wipes his hand clean and then moves over to where Clint is. He's almost really good at hiding the slight limp. "If you're a friend then you're not a stranger."

"Well, there you go," Clint says with a slightly worried frown as he watches Blaine moving.

"So...your dad was pretty mad, huh?"

Blaine nods as he looks at the comic book he's been handed. "Yeah," he says. "He just doesn't think that I should buy these things."

Clint crouches down to be more on his level. "Yeah, my dad didn't like 'em very much either. Does he get mad like that a lot?"

"Only when I'm not good," Blaine says as he checks over his hands again to make sure there's not paint on them. He's was very neat while painting so he's already pretty clean, he just doesn't want to accidentally get paint on the book itself as he takes it out and starts to flip through them.

Clint is pretty impressed by that, really. If it were him, he'd have paint all over everything.

"How are you not good?"

"I went into the shop without telling him," Blaine said. "And he told me not to buy any more comics."

Clint nods carefully. "And when you got home...did your dad get madder than he was at the store?"

"A little," Blaine says warily. He doesn't want to lie, but he doesn't know how much of the truth he can tell.

And Clint is very careful about how he asks this, because he doesn't want to spook Blaine.

"When I was your age, my dad used to get mad at me sometimes too. Real mad."

[mediumdrip]

"Yeah?" Blaine looks up from the comic book. "Were you a disappointment too?"

"Yeah, I was," Clint says with a nod. "I tried to be good, but I wasn't always, and he'd get mad. Especially if he was drinking."

Blaine doesn't respond to that, instead he pretends to focus his attention on the comic book.

Clint ducks his head, leaning in a little bit. "Does your dad drink like that sometimes?"

"I don't know," Blaine says in a small voice.

[from_a_distance]

"You know," Clint says carefully, "I never told anybody about my dad and how mad he would get. I think now maybe I should have."

[mediumdrip]

Blaine is pretty quiet for a moment. He puts the book back into the plastic. "I think I should go back to work," he says. "Will you hold onto this? I don't want to get paint on it."

"I will," Clint says. "If you will answer one question for me."

Blaine sighs and looks up at him. "What?" he asks.

[from_a_distance]

Clint meets his eyes and says very sincerely, "I promise you that you will not get in trouble for answering this, okay?"
